Moving to another country where the language, culture is different is challenging for anyone. However, as a student many times it means also other challenges that initially may not be obvious.
Students moving away to go to school usually go alone and leave their family and most of their friends behind. This is also means, culture, religions, spiritual practices, food and doing routine community events is left behind. Most of the cultures outside of North America area collectivist and have a lot of community and family activities versus North American culture of individualistic culture. These issues can create challenges in how people interact day to day at school, shopping and taking care of regular day to day activities.
Add to this the stress of school, schedules, and all the different visa issues and requirements just to continue to stay in their chosen program can be very stressful. Not to mention where to find help for health care or sorting out transportation and perhaps finding a part time job. All this can create stress, anxiety, and fears that can interfere with life.
All of these compounds with the need to perform at school and not having the same supports in place of family and community in the new environment,
